View sponsoring as an important service that helps the candidate have the best possible experience as they journey, in faith, from the Precursillo phase to the Postcursillo phase. As a sponsor, you are responsible for ensuring your candidate FULLY understands what the weekend entails and, more importantly, understands the Fourth Day. Please explain the importance of Group Reunion, Ultreya, and School of Leaders BEFORE they decide to attend the weekend.

The Cursillo Group Reunion is NOT optional for sponsors. If you are not in a regular Cursillo Group Reunion, you should not sponsor alone, since Group Reunion and Ultreya are key components of the ongoing program of sharing and mutual support and the primary goal of the 3-Day Weekend. You may, however, co-sponsor with a Cursillista who is in a Group Reunion.

In short, to sponsor a Candidate is a significant commitment of energy and attention. Please do not take the responsibility lightly. As a sponsor, you assume considerable responsibilities, and you may be contacted to confirm that you understand them and that you are prepared to fulfill them.

SPONSOR GUIDELINES

Candidate Selection: Please consider the following

Have you spoken to God about your Candidate before speaking to your candidate about Cursillo? In prayer ask God to assist you in your choice of candidate.

Is he / she a baptized Catholic? Is the candidate able to receive the Sacraments? Does your candidate have the ability and desire to take part in the sacrament of reconciliation?

Is he / she active in the parish or a leader in their own way? Has he / she the ability to become a leader and change his / her environment to Christ? Does he / she show potential for taking an active role in the Church and sharing their faith with others?

Does he / she show strength of character and self control? Does he / she have strong Christian values?

Is he / she interested in examining what it means to be a Catholic in today's world?

Is he / she a mature person? Is your candidate healthy both emotionally and physically?

Is he / she capable of capturing the message of Cursillo?

Is he / she able to live the Fourth Day (Ultreya, Group Reunion and School of Leaders)?

LASTLY: Invite them to Cursillo. Make a Friend, Be a Friend, Bring a Friend to Christ, before, during and after. Explain the purpose of the Cursillo Movement and the format of the weekend; make sure they know it is not a retreat and that Cursillo expects a Catholic recommitment. Secrecy has no place in Cursillo. Make sure the Candidate is going because he or she wants to, not as a favor to you.

Checklist

As a sponsor, I will do Palanca before and during the Cursillo.

Pray for guidance, know the goals and methods of Cursillo, and live the message of the weekend.

I have described the weekend to my candidate: 3 days, 15 talks by lay and religious, talks followed by discussions, Mass every day, good meals!

I have explained Fourth Day to my candidate: Group Reunion, Ultreya, School of Leaders.

I have explained Group Reunion to my candidate: Piety, Study, Action, Close Moments, Far Moments, and personal accountability.

I have a Group Reunion awaiting him / her. The new Cursillista joins your Group Reunion, or another existing Group Reunion.

If I need help placing the candidate in a Group Reunion, I have begun to seek one out (Will the table from the weekend form a group? Have I checked with the parish rep on options? Have I reviewed the list of current Group Reunions?)

Transportation: As a sponsor, you will arrange transportation to and from the Cursillo weekend meeting place. Your candidate should not drive their own car. You should be at the meeting place with your candidate at the prescribed time on Thursday night. Be sure your candidate has eaten dinner prior to picking them up (there may be light refreshments offered at the retreat center). You should be present to greet your candidate promptly at the prescribed time on Sunday as well. Offer to help the candidate with any family or home needs during their weekend. Make sure their family has your phone number and the emergency number at the retreat center.

CURSILLO PAYMENT

As a sponsor, you are not responsible for paying for your candidate. However, if you would like to pay for all or a portion of their weekend, you may use the same methods. You may choose to remain anonymous, but please let precursillo@memphiscursillo.com know how much you plan to contribute for your candidate. Thank you!

The cost of the Cursillo weekend for your candidate is $300.00 and is due with their candidate's application by the Monday before the weekend starts. A lack of funds should not discourage anyone from making a Cursillo. Please let us know if your candidate needs financial assistance; scholarships are available and all requests are kept confidential. Candidates can pay online or by check made payable to Memphis Cursillo.

DECLARATION & SIGNATURE

As a sponsor, I say YES to Christ to fulfill these responsibilities in such a way that His grace and love are revealed to my candidate through my Christian action. I commit myself to serving as a companion, guide and witness to the candidate before, during and after the Cursillo 3-Day weekend. I pledge to support the candidate by my ongoing example of living the Cursillo method through Group Reunion and Ultreya. Further, if I am not active in the Cursillo method, I will be faithful to my friend by finding a co-sponsor. My signature on this application indicates my commitment to the high calling of servanthood.
